Creating Shark Advocates One Child at a Time

Sharks are an important part of our oceans though many people do not know much about them or fear them. Sharks are some of the largest predators in the oceans and not all of them are carnivorous. Even though they are large predators their populations are declining rapidly. Sharks4Kids is trying to change this by educating kids on sharks and their conservation. Sharks4Kids mission is to create a new generation of shark advocates through the education of kids of all ages. They achieve this by through education, outreach, and adventure. They host expeditions for people of all ages to explore sharks and their habitats.

Since their start in 2013 Sharks4Kids has educated almost 200,000 students in 74 countries. They host webinars and go to schools to educate kids on sharks. Sharks4Kids also have free educational materials for teacher to engage and educate their classes. There are coloring sheets, crafts, and other activities for kids to explore on their own. They host educational days and fund field trips for kids in South Florida and The Bahamas. They also hold a virtual summer camp for kids to learn about sharks and shark conservation in small groups. You can swim with sharks through virtual reality during their events and school visits.

You can also go shark tagging with Sharks4Kids to learn more about sharks and help gather more data about sharks. Their blogs are fun and educational such as their Elasmobranch of the Month blog. They also have Fin Tastic Allstars every year who are students making great efforts to educate others. These children’s willingness to learn and teach others makes me have hope for the future of sharks. Some of the events they go to every year include Rock the Ocean’s Tortuga Music Festival and Shark Con. Shark con is a convention held every year for shark enthusiasts and the public to promote the conservation of sharks.
