5 things to avoid when snorkeling with asthma

1.     Whatever you do, DO NOT PANIC! This is a common mistake for many people who have never gone snorkeling. Not everyone realizes that it takes some time to get used to breathing through a snorkel. This causes many people to panic and often leads to shortness of breath. IF you have asthma this can also lead to an attack that might just ruin your day. So its best to stay calm and take small easy breathes until you get a hang of what youre actually doing.
2.     Dont push yourself to swim the fastest. This is also a common mistake for beginners. Your first thought is to start kicking your feet as if you were in a swimming pool. However, this doesnt quiet work when youre wearing fins in the middle of the ocean. You wont get anywhere without getting exhausted first. When swimming with fins you want to barely bend youre knees and swim more with the motion of moving youre hips very slightly in the water. This will allow you to move around without tiring yourself out within a matter of seconds. Theres so much to see even if you are just floating at the surface.
3.     Avoid rough waters the first time you go out. This will help you get more comfortable with the experience of snorkeling. Often rougher water has waves that crash down making the snorkel fill with water if youre not a hundred percent sure as to what you are doing. Heres a list of some of the best places to go snorkeling if you're a beginner. http://www.islands.com/worlds-best-islands-snorkeling-0
4.     Stay away from really hot days the first time youre in the water. Often people with asthma are effective by activities that involve a lot of movement in the heat. Over heating can sometimes cause an unwanted asthma attack. If going out on a hot day, make sure you stay hydrated and in the shade. The last thing you want is to have issues breathing in the middle of the water. That doesnt usually end well for anyone and can be a scary experience.

5.     Avoid sunburn!!! This goes for everyone, not just people with asthma. When your snorkeling, the back half of your body is always at the surface of the water. This makes it extremely easy for you to burn. Make sure you cover yourself in sunblock and keep reapplying. Its also go to wear swim shorts and a rash guard if you have one.

  1. Swimming using your hips and abs, with your knees straight also avoids strain on your knees and keeps your legs from tiring out also

  2. I used to have asthma when I was younger... wayyyy younger, but as I grew older I grew out of it. I think that when it came to the water I think a lot of people had their own challenges to work with weather it be you with your asthma or me with my severe motion sickness. I was so happy to see you finally get out there and learn how to stay calm and control your breath so that you could witness this great experience. Don't let anything hold you back! Even if your on a boat puking to get one good picture with a shark! :)
