How to be a Totally Awesome Marine Scientist (even when you feel like you’re dying) …


  1.  Own it! You’re already sea sick – it is what it is! Taking Dramamine ahead of time is a great idea; but it's not fool proof. Say excuse me and toss those cookies as far over the side as you can. Apparently there’s points for distance!
  2.  Stay Hydrated! I know you feel like it’s a losing battle – but there is absolutely nothing worse than dry heaving. Dive boats usually have Tang, water, juice and soda aboard – DRINK IT!

3. Stay involved! The more you occupy yourself with the excitement around you, the less you’ll be thinking of how queasy you are. With shark tagging – there are plenty of jobs to keep you busy- fin sampling, micro-biome cultures, dorsal fin tagging, obtaining measurements, etc. Something always needs to get done - and quick! The animal's safety is the #1 priority.
4.  Wear your sunscreen! If you’re spending all your time laying out in the sun, you won’t be focused on the information around you, or worse yet, you’ll be nursing your sunburn while trying to write your blog post. No one takes a lobster’s data seriously.  


5. Put a smile on your face! You paid the money and traveled from NJ to FL for a week to experience this. You got up at the crack of dawn, and you’re on a boat – Why wouldn’t you suck it up and make the best of it?

It's super easy to let sea sickness ruin your day - but don't! Only you can choose to power through and truly experience the awesomeness. You'll be so happy you did!

  1. This blog is awesome! Staying occupied while seasick is probably one of the best things for people, it keeps their mind away from puking and focusing on something else. There may be other ways to help people from getting seasick if the Dramamine doesn't work, like getting plenty of sleep the night before, making sure you're hydrated the day before, and maybe even using Seabands!

  2. Kathleen let me just say that you are a trooper!! I am truly inspired by your constant smile and bubble attitude. You never sat down when it was your turn and you wanted to be involved in everything. Although the past two days have been the first time i have ever been sea sick, I can truly say that is it a miserable fate. The Blistering sun, and the rocky waves are unbearable but you stuck it out and wrote this great blog post!! :)
