Who Runs the World? Girls!

Today the Tropical Ospreys went shark tagging with the Nova Southeastern University research team and some lovely ladies from MISS - minorities in shark science. Founded by four Black female shark scientists, MISS' mission is to diversify the field of shark science and create more opportunities for young women of color to enter this competitive field. On the boat with us was co-founder Carlee Jackson, a shark and sea turtle conservationist. Carlee and her other co-founders hope to create an equitable and inclusive path to shark science.

MISS offers free workshops that give hands-on experience in shark research. MISS members can learn field research techniques and spend time on a live-aboard research vessel, while also building a network of like-minded women interested in marine research. One of the most amazing things about MISS is their efforts to break down the financial barrier that stands between gender minorities of color and shark science. They fundraise and apply for grants to create the fully funded opportunities they offer; you can make a donation here

It was so amazing getting to work side by side with these women, especially as a woman in STEM myself. The work done by MISS to get more women involved in a field that is stereotypically dominated by men is so inspiring. In just a few hours, I was able to meet and chat with some of the MISS members on board, and found so many different backgrounds and stories that I could relate to. At the end of the day, we are all here for the same reason: we are passionate about marine conservation and want to do our part to make the oceans a better place for those who call it their home. This mission unites women all over the world, and hopefully MISS continues to grow and effect positive change everywhere.

  1. Hi Bri,
Working with MISS during our shark tagging event was great! Everyone was so friendly, supportive, and ready to share stories and possible opportunities with each other. I think you were the one that said it, but tiny boat rides really do cause people to get to know each other. Though the waves were a little hectic, overall, it was a great day where we got a taste of shark tagging and got to learn more about MISS and its mission. MISS's mission is truly a great one and I can't be more grateful for the people who are paving a path that can allow others to make their own.

  2. Hey Bri,
I also really enjoyed working with the MISS ladies during our shark tagging trip. All of them were so friendly and I really enjoyed getting to know a little about what led them into the field of marine science and how they got to where they were today. There was such a range of different levels of experience and ages. The one girl I was talking to is only just going into 10th grade. I wish I was able to have experiences like this shark tagging when I was that young. So many of them suggested different internships or types job/employers that would be perfect for me. I love MISS's mission and hope that they keep growing and paving the way for young women in marine science.

  3. Seeing, meeting, and learning about this organization was really inspiring. I think that every young girl in this field can relate to MISS's mission in some way or another. It is a really awesome organization and I really hope they keep working into the future and continue to inspire young women in STEM.
