The Thai Chili Chronicle

After a day of snorkeling and diving the gang was ready for dinner. As always our beloved guide Dr. Z brought us to a new place to try some cool food. Bangkok Cuisine was just minutes away from our hotel and although I have eaten Thai food like pad thai, it did not satisfy my hunger as it was bland. However, I was looking forward to trying something new. Being South Asian I have been raised by curry with some kick to it. So when I saw that there was shrimp curry with rice on the menu ya boy had to try it.

The meal was delicious and as we continued to eat and talk about the day and learn more about each other, Dr. Z became the first victim of the elusive red thai chili pepper. Her pad thai was bland so she asked for some condiments to add and in came the spice rack consisting of chili flakes, and two versions of pickled thai chili peppers. I am used to the heat but after Dr. Z had just the liquid on a bean sprout, many dared to try an actual piece of paper. Mike being the first followed by me and then Alex. Slowly we all ate one at least once and although at first many felt the bern, the hardest hit was to our dear friend Ciara who looked like she was about to die. Even after an hour it was still burning. Don't worry we got her some sweet haagen-dazs to help make her feel better.

Now it's not clear what type of thai chili pepper it was but the Scoville unit can range from 50,000 to 100,000. this pepper is widely used in south and southeastern Asian cuisine. Do to let the small size fool you cause it will pack a punch. f you do eat one and it's too much, just eat something dairy.
