Tips for the New Florida Bound Tropical Ospreys!

Wow, what a week. I have never experienced Florida quite like that! This trip has taught me a lot about marine biology and the experiences I shared with my fellow team members were one of a kind. Whether if it was the island excursion with Count Chowder, whackín some shmucks with Mikey, or seeing ancient coral reefs, every experience had an impact on me in someway. I wish I knew a few things going in though. I would like to share some of them for all of you.

First things first, I wish I either brought contacts or prescription dive masks for when we had the opportunity to enjoy the blue ocean. Snorkeling was awesome! But I saw more considering I am borderline blind. Regardless though, seeing the organisms we learned about up close in their natural habitat was AWESOME. Brush up on your identification! It makes it that much more fun when you’re out there.

Next, when I was in Key West, I was unaware there was a beach nearby ti go swimming in, don’t make the same mistake I did and make sure you check it out! Although, if you aren't feeling the beach that day, there is an AWESOME ice-cream place nearby. I forgot the name of it but I'm sure google can help with that.

While kayaking in the mangroves, I forgot to bring my dive mask. You can still see very clearly and what not because it is shallow, but I wanted to get even closer in the deeper areas. Just be careful not to step on upside down jellies! Another thing about the kayaking trip was, make sure you remember what time to be back and go to the island first! There is a wicked current and it'll be a lot harder since kayaking through the mangrove can take some energy. The island though, is totally worth it. After that ride the current back to the mangrove entrance and it will be smoother sailing. Also, bring a bag!

And last but not least, take a bunch of photos. The memories captured by my team and I will always bring a smile to my face as I scroll though the awesome time we all had together. Enjoy your time with TA Mike also, he isn’t such a bad guy. (Dare him to chug a sundae tho)
