It’s no surprise that sharks are sadly on an extreme decline
that is primarily due to the actions of human kind. Yet while
many of us know that shark is a delicacy for their fins in shark fin soup, human kind has found other ways to use this amazing creature.
1.
Cosmetics:
Squalene or squalane (same thing) is the oil inside of a sharks liver. Often
this is used in many cosmetics products such as lotions, sunscreen, lip
balms, deodorants, and other things used in order to make you look good.
2.
Medicine:
Shark cartilage and liver oil (squalene/ squalane again) can be found in energy
drinks, supplements, vaccines, medicinal creams, and shark cartilage powders
and pills. The later two being used for cancer, arthritis,
enteritis, and more.
3.
‘Leather’
products: Shark skin (or shagreen) is used for making wallets, purses,
shoes, future, and other leather products.
4.
Jewelry: This is a commonly known that shark teeth
are a common accessory on necklaces, bracelets, and other forms of jewelry. But
it sadly doesn’t stop there as jaws and the skin can also be made into jewelry
as well.
5.
Food: As stated before, sharks are well known to
be eaten in shark fin soup. Shark meat, however, is also eaten and sold as well
(found at the Publix on 26th street). In fact, imitation crab,
lobster, or shrimp such as surimi often will contain shark in it. The same can
be said for non-shark products like fish & chips or white fish fillets.
6.
Pet products: What chew toy your dog has in its
mouth or what your feeding your cat may have traces of shark in them along with
pet supplements.
Despite this, there are still things that can be done to discourage
the use of shark products.
1.
Check the label: Make sure the product doesn’t
contain any squalene, squalane, or any parts of the shark as mentioned before
buying them.
2.
Avoid jewelry and souvenirs: Don’t buy anything
made by a shark to wear on your body, keep in your house, or as a gift. A
stuffed manatee will do fine.
3.
Tell others: Let people know what they may be
buying or eating and tell them the negative impacts it will have on sharks
around the world.
