7 Underwater Photography Tips

1. Know your gear- While many may just buy an underwater digital camera, that may not be everyone's cup of tea. There are multiple types of gadgets to take underwater photos. They all range from the Kodak, the GoPro, to the professional submersible strobes. Florida underwater photographer Stephen Frink agrees that a traveler's compact camera can still offer quality photos even though he prefers strobes.

2. Practice- So you have you camera, so what now? It's best that you practice using the camera before you do the real thing. Try using it at a pool and swim around, or even just in the bathtub. Even famous underwater photographer David Valencia agrees practice is important.

3. Charge the battery- If your camera uses a battery, make sure that it's charged before you go swimming. You wouldn't want to miss the perfect photo all because your battery is dead or dying. At the very least, have enough to last your photography. Remember to also charge the camera after each session just to make sure.

4. Take multiple photos- The perfect photo doesn't always come on the first try and may come out more blurry than dersired or at the wrong angle. Take multiple photos of the same object and just delete the ones that you don't desire.

5. Keep your eyes on the camera- Just because you see something clear as day in the water doesn't mean your camera will. While you may be looking right at the object, the camera might see the sand below you. Look at your camera before you take your photo.

6. Don't stop and check- After you take the photo(s), just keep swimming onward to the next site. There may be tons to see around you and it be a waste to battery and time. You can check when you return to the surface.

7. Sharimg is caring- Once you find the photos you like and want to keep (deleting the bad ones) share them with the world. Whether it be with family and friends or even a putting them in photo contest. People will want to know what you've seen under the water.

  1. Great blog post, it was really well written and very informative. I definitely could have used some of these tips while we were snorkeling. Especially not stopping to check each photo after I took it because by the time I went to take another photo the fish had swam away
