Risk and Reward: A Snorkel Experience

The age old saying: “gotta risk it to get the biscuit” has never been so true.

The snorkel/dive trip today out of Capt. Slates was something to remember for a life time.

The water clarity was insane, possibly the clearest I’ve ever experienced. 50 feet of visibility, calm seas, a beautiful reef... what more could you ask for?

As my snorkel session progressed I chose to dive deep ,closer to the reef. It was about 20-30  feet depending on the area. After quite a number of repetitive dives my ear began to ring. I decided it was time to take a break.

My initial thought was that the ringing would stop after a few minutes but this was not the case.

For the rest of the day I took it easy in hopes I would be able to get in the water one more time for the night dive.

By the time the the opportunity arose for the night dive my ear was still ringing and felt like it had a lot of pressure built up.

I could not resist the crystal clear waters tempting me with an electric blue shine comparable to none.

About 10-15 minutes in is when I got my first glimpse of a sea turtle. Effortlessly swimming high in the water column, I studied the thing. Detailing every inch of his/her body so that the image would be forever engraved into my brain. I followed this Green Turtle for about ten minutes until we parted ways.

Green Sea Turtles are recognized as an endangered species by the International Union for Conservation of Nature. They are threatened by the destruction of nesting and foraging grounds and the harvesting of their eggs and the species themselves.

There are a number of ways to help the species repopulate. Picking up trash, cleaning beaches, protecting beaches and foraging grounds are key. To make an impact as an individual try volunteering or donating to The Turtle Hospital

  1. Proud of you for muscling through your pain to be able to experience this reef! Your shots are awesome, it's cool that the snorkelers are still getting to experience the same wildlife as the divers.

  2. I'm glad you dove down to take these shots, even though it was risky. I watched it for a good amount of time while snorkeling but from high up it looked dark green. I'm glad you were able to get a better view! Thanks for sharing.

  3. Great photos! The turtle was definitely so cool to see just from snorkeling and I’m glad we got to do the beach clean up to help save them from the plastics on the beach.

  4. Following the turtles was one of the coolest parts of that dive. I am amazed that we were able to keep up and how graceful the turtle was.
