Of course, you can't be like a Horse Conch or a Loggerhead Sea
Turtle and wear your home on your back.
So, here's a list of 5
different ways to deal with homesickness, in case they happen to hit on this
Florida Keys field experience!
1) Remember
that you'll be home before you know it - don't forget that this is a
once in a lifetime experience! You've worked hard all semester for this moment
and you don't want to waste it away by being sad the whole time. So, soak up
all that the Florida Keys have to offer and remember that home ain't so far
away.
2) Live
in the moment – try to be present and not be so focused on how much
you miss home. Living in the moment not only helps you to focus on what’s in
front of you, but also to appreciate it more.
3) Find
something to distract you – maybe you’re laying down after a long day
and you start to feel the homesick blues coming on. Try and find a distraction
like looking through all the pictures you took that day while in the Keys or
studying up on that Stypopodium and Dictyota that
you crammed into your head last semester 10 minutes before the test! A
little refresh on your macroalgae won’t hurt.
4) Keep
in touch with friends and family – if you’re really missing your
friends and family, give ‘em a call! Even just a 5-minute phone call won’t hurt
if you have some down time, and it sure will make you feel a lot better to talk
to someone from home.
5) Bring
pictures of your friends, family and PETS! – bring plenty of photos of
them to look at in case you get homesick! But who needs humans anyway… looking
at a picture of your own pet dog or cat will cure any feelings of homesickness
right away! Here’s a picture of my dog Otto that I will for sure be looking at
throughout this trip!

ways deal with homesickness while traveling!
