Are cheap flights worth the hassle?

If you’re looking to travel this summer without paying top dollar for a flight, spirit airlines may be the airline for you. Spirit offers flights from small local airports at reasonable and enticingly low costs. The prices are at an offer that is hard to refuse. Although this seems like a perfect airline for a quick vacation getaway, is there a catch? Well here is what I have learned about flying Spirit airlines from when I flew from Atlantic City, NJ to Fort Lauderdale, Fl.

Cheap plane tickets may be one of the only positive things Spirit airline has to offer. Spirits round-trip flights can be at least half of what other airlines cost, plus most of Spirts flights are nonstop. This is a great deal, but many of spirit’s flights are either delayed or canceled. Rarely have I had a spirit flight that was on time.
The reason why the plane tickets are so cheap is that you pay for everything else, the baggage, carry-ons, drinks, food and even seats with leg room. So the catch is you get what you pay for, just the bare minimum along with a plane ticket.
However, there are plenty of ways to save on all the extra costs and even your plane ticket. First, you can save even more on your plane ticket by following Spirits promotions and discounts. You can keep up to date with their promotional events by subscribing to emails or checking their website. To save money on luggage fees, pay for your luggage as soon as possible. The longer you wait, the more expensive it gets. Luggage rates for a carry on starting at $35 dollars when you book your flight and can increase up to $100 if you wait to pay for the carry on at the gate. It cost an extra $8-$40 to pick a seat, so to avoid that extra cost, stick with the seat provided. To save on food and drinks, simply don’t buy them on the plane, or bring your own.
Overall, the extra costs aren’t a hassle if you plan the prices out correctly. The only hassle is the delayed and canceled flights, which aren’t in your control. So I say yes, take the chance of cancelation with Spirit airlines.

  1. So I have always flown with United Airlines, where mostly everything is included in your ticket (carry-on suitcase and personal item as well as free snacks on the plane). This was my first time flying with Spirit, and although they brag about their cheap flights, nothing is included! By time you purchase a carry-on or checked bag and snacks, it evens out to the same price as a flight where all these things are included. Just something I noticed.
