What to Pack for Florida from an Experienced Tropical Osprey

When packing for this trip to Florida it is important to remember that it is only for a week and that there is a limit to what can be packed since the van is jam packed with people and limited trunk space. Keep in mind that the weather is about 95 degrees and extremely humid everyday and there is a constant chance that it is going to rain. Also, since this is a school trip, you should also think about how many actiticits there are going to be day to day, and to accept that you are all going to be hot and sweaty squished together the whole week. JUST EMBRACE IT! While sweating in the awful heat that Florida has to offer, it is important to be safe from the sun since you’ll be outside 95% of the day each day.
As the week came to an end, we came together as a group to talk about what we wished we had brought to the trip and also what we should’ve left at home. We came up with an extensive, yet helpful packing list that may help the future teams in packing lightly and having the most necessary items. Here is the majority of what we had come up with:

Weather for the next week!
  • Sunscreen! - Although Dr.Z provides sunscreen, it might be helpful to bring along Zinc for your face to have extra protection and a lighter formula to reduce breakouts.
  • Flip flops- These will be the only shoes you will need for the trip...leave the sneakers at home.
  • Shirts ( 1 long sleeve, 1-2 Tees, and tank tops) and cloth/workout material shorts- It is hot and you will be sweaty, there are laundry facilities to wash clothes so bring less.
  • At least 2 swimsuits and a rashguard - You might be wearing them all day so it helps to have another to switch for the next day.
  • Your laptop- although some were able to share laptops, it is helpful to have your own so you can take your time and be able to write the blogs with ease.
  • Fanny pack- While walking through activities, this would be more useful than a large backpack for phones and wallets.
  • Water Bottle- It’s very hot and it’s important to stay hydrated #hydrateordiedrate
Overall, this is a light list to stay in the word count but it is important to be mindful when packing and remember to have fun!

  1. Phoebe, looking at your revised list of things to bring on the journey to Southern Florida I definitely think that it is on point for the awesome week that we had. Blessed with little rain, we had a week to remember. One thing that I would add for sure would be a rain coat cause although we didn't need to use them at any point as we sat outside of thunderstorms, we could have easily been caught in those storms. Other than that I can completely agree that packing light is key! Leave the shoes at home.

  3. I agree with what your wrote. I strongly emphasize the flip flops. I decided to wear closed toed shoes and quickly i realized this was not the call. They made me very hot and wishing I had flip flops on the entire time.
